- Have some questions regarding Win95 and modems:
-
- 1. I have two icons in the control panel associated with the modem, one
- for the Internet and one for the modem itself. BOTH configure the modem.
- Do these run INDEPENDENT of each other or are they the same? What I'm
- getting at is that I want to have ONE setting when I connect to a BBS
- and another for the WWW. Since the files I would get from a BBS are
- usually zip files I don't want to use data compression (the S setting
- for my Hayes 28.8k is S46=2, to enable it & S46=136 to disable
- compression). I tried putting S46=2 in the Internet con gig box but it
- also shows up in the MODEM config box. And when I load a comm program
- in Windows and use the AT&V command to see my settings I still have data
- compression OFF(my default), so apparently Windows didn't send ANYTHING
- to the modem! Trying to put an ^M after the string merely gave me an
- error message when the winsock dialer attempted to connect.
-
- 2. When in PURE dos alone and using Qmodem Pro and downloading a file
- the disk write occurs every 32bytes and when in Windows doing the same
- thing the disk write occurs much quicker, say every 5 bytes or so. I
- have fifo buffers enabled but I would like to PROLONG the disk writes
- along the lines of the dos program. This seems to speed up the transfers
- since disk writes don't occur that often. How can I change Win95's
- settings to enable this?
-
- Thanks in advance
